THE BEGINNING OF THE END

The fires I see burning outside my father’s castle are in direct conflict with the chill I feel in my heart. The Whimlings and the Trovelians have started the fires in protest of me. As my father lay in his sleep chamber clinging to life by a thread as fine as silk, I try to prepare myself for not only his death but also the impending battle to take my place as Queen of Ryzald.
My father has been King of Ryzald for many years, although just how many years and how old he was when he became king is a secret he keeps closely guarded. I tease him about his vanity and the absurdity of his secret but still have never learned the truth of his age. He has always assured me that his heart was born the day I was conceived and that it will continue living as long as I do. That promise is soon to be broken though, not by his will but by a simple insect sting.
The day had been one of the best I could remember. Kiya awoke my father early, she was to come for a visit. She needed his help with some trouble Daqu, her twin brother, had stirred up on the moon our planets share. It was always a happy time when Kiya came to see us. She and Daqu had been raised as children of my father, and I viewed them as my brother and sister. The chance to see her was reason enough for a carnival. Father had cast an illusion of lavender over the whole park and had scented the air with a calming spice that made the atmosphere one of relaxed enjoyment.
Some of the Whimlings were preparing to entertain us with a dance they had finally mastered. The sweet smell of berries that surrounded them let me know that they were very happy to be able to show off for Kiya, and that they were sure it would be a great performance. The crude little marching steps they took were offset by the quick spins of the dance. I had to smile at their serious faces and I was sure Kiya would love the sweet and loving gesture. The Trovelians were busy making sure that there would be sufficient food and drink for everyone. Organizing things is definitely the Trovelians strong suit. Father has always depended on them to pull everything together, and to make sure nothing or no one gets over looked. The Chieftain, called Kreeg, looked very pleased with the progress of the preparations. But a bit unhappy about the new slide the Whimlings were trying to bring into the park. I had to laugh as he was trying to explain how unsafe the apparatus looked. The cute little Whimlings kept repeating that, “It will be fun though”. It cannot be described as an argument, simply because the Whimlings aren’t capable of arguing, only thoughts of fun and fear. The logical Trovelian was at a loss as to how to handle this situation. I approached the scene and marveled at the slide and how much fun we will have playing on it. Kreeg looked upset and I heard his mind screaming, “That ugly thing is not coming in this park!” I quieted his mind and asked him to trust me. Then I gave the slide a thorough going over and gave it my seal of approval. I told them they were very clever to plan on a water slide at the lake. They looked confused but I continued to brag on how wonderful it would be to slide and splash down in the water. Then I put the images clearly in their minds and they were eager to complete “their” plan and to take the slide to the lake. Kreeg thanked me for my help but wondered in his mind why I would humor the silly little beasts. I touched his mind with the thought of a baby Whimling looking deep in his eyes and the sweet smell of berries that accompanies all happy Whimlings and he had to smile, the tension was completely gone from his stressed posture.

....more to come Friday Dec 19th!
